The driver of a BMW, a Toyota and a Jeep was killed in an accident that occurred about 9:15 p.m.
Monday near the intersection of West Interstate 80 and South Mountain Road, according to Colorado State Patrol troopers.
Trooper Kyle Larkin said the two vehicles were traveling eastbound when they collided head-on with another vehicle.
Trooper Larkin identified the driver of the BMW as 36-year-old David M. Smith.
Trooper Brian Schmitt said Smith was driving the Toyota when he crashed the Jeep into the BMW, which had a side window down.
Trooper Schmitt identified the Jeep as the driver.
Trooper Smith and the BMW were not wearing seat belts.
Trooper Scott Coughlin, a spokesman for the Colorado State Troopers, said the Jeep was totaled.
Smith’s vehicle was towed from the scene.
Trooper Coughlins said Smith had an alcohol and drug dependency issue and was cited for DUI last month.
He was released from jail on his own recognizance, he said.
Trooper Shari Brown, spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Service, said an investigation into the crash is underway.
“We’re trying to determine what exactly happened,” Brown said.
“But the investigation is continuing.”
